The risk of paint flowing along the outside of the can, as the impermeable funnel and the location of the upper edge relative to the edge of the can means that the use, in this respect, does not differ significantly from scraping directly on the edge of the can.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the present invention is to eliminate, or at least reduce the above-mentioned problems, and to provide a device for scraping liquid, which device prevents the formation of dried liquid residues on the outside of a container or on its upper edge.
This object is achieved according to a first aspect of the invention by a device, made of a flexible material, for wiping liquid from a brush, the device being intended for mounting on an exposed edge of a container and comprising a scraping portion and a fastening portion, characterized in that the device comprises an upper and a lower long side and a left and a right short side which together define a substantially rectangular surface, the scraping and fastening portions being partly separated by a substantially U-shaped groove which penetrates the rectangular surface.
This design provides a flexible device that can be used on different types and sizes of containers, and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and requires little space because the compact, rectangular shape allows both injection molding and punching as a manufacturing method.
In addition, this design prevents liquid spillage on the outside or edge of the container on which the device is mounted, since the scraping surface itself is located inside the peripheral edge of the container edge and there is space for liquid drainage on both sides of this scraping surface, leading excess liquid directly into the container and not along the side or on the edge of the container.
In one embodiment, the middle part of the U-shaped groove is concavely shaped, or the whole groove is elliptically shaped, seen from the upper long side in a direction towards the lower long side. These rounded shapes lead to a more stable connection between the scraping portion of the device and the inside of the container and between the fastening portion of the device and the outside of the container.
The groove may include a gripper recess at at least one end of the U-shape.
This gripping recess increases the interaction with the edge of the container and thus the stability when the device is mounted on the container.
The gripping recess may comprise a continuation of the groove from the end of the U-shape, in a direction which differs from the direction shown by the end.
This direction may be substantially perpendicular to the direction of the end, in the direction of the opposite end of the U-shape. This design entails an adaptation to the design of the container edge, so that the stability during use increases further.
In one embodiment, the device comprises a recess which runs parallel to, and is arranged on at least a part of, the upper long side. This recess delimits the surface where the brush is to be scraped, which thus prevents paint from running on the entire device or being led out onto the container to which it is attached.
In another embodiment, at least one of said long and short sides may comprise at least one of a filler, an adhesive spreader, a graduated scale and a brush holder. In addition, at least one of the corners of said rectangular surface may have a radius corresponding to that of a joint pin. Adding your functions to the device means that the user has several functions, and thus tools, available at the same time, which facilitates work.
The device can be made of cardboard, which gives a cheaper product, or of plastic or metal, which gives a more durable product that can be used for a longer period of time. Both materials provide a device that can be reused and cleaned.
The device for wiping liquid from the brush, as above, can be used with liquid selected from the group consisting of paint, oil, varnish, stain and soap. Brief Description of the Drawings The invention will be described in more detail in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings which, by way of example, show a presently preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a schematic side view of a wiper according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of a wiper according to Fig. 1, mounted on a container.
Fig. 3 shows a detailed side view of a wiper according to an embodiment of the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The present invention relates to a device 1 for wiping liquid, suitably paint, from a brush. The device 1 is made of a flexible material, and is mounted on the edge 2 of an opened container 3, such as a paint can. Regardless of content, the container is usually circular or elliptical, and made of sheet metal or plastic.
The device 1 further has an upper long side 6, a lower long side 7, a left short side 8 and a right short side 9, which together form a rectangular surface. The thickness of the device is substantially less than the length of the long or short sides, which gives a disc-shaped appearance, not unlike a regular credit card. This rectangular surface, i.e. the disc, is divided into an upper wiping portion 4 and a lower fastening portion 5, and these portions are partially separated from each other by a substantially U-shaped groove 10. This groove 10 penetrates the rectangular surface, i.e. goes straight through the device 1 in the same direction as the thickness. Thus, the wiping portion 4 and the fastening portion 5, respectively, can be bent and rotated relative to each other and relative to the original rectangular surface.
The U-shaped groove 10 consists of a middle part 11 and two legs, each of the legs starting from each of the two ends of the middle part. The middle part 11 is concavely formed seen from the upper long side 6 in a direction towards the lower long side 7, and it extends substantially parallel to the long sides 6, 7. The legs are arranged approximately perpendicularly towards this middle part so that they extend parallel to the short sides 8, 9. Each leg 15 in turn has one end 13, which also forms the ends of the entire U-shaped groove 10.
These ends 13 are provided with a gripping recess 12. The gripping recess 12 is a continuation of the groove, from the end 13 of the leg and the U-shape 10 in a direction which differs from the direction which the end 13 has. I.e. the end 13 is directed parallel to the short sides 8, 9, and the gripping recess 12 is directed parallel to the long sides. The two gripping recesses 12 are directed towards each other, towards the short side 8, 9 which is furthest from the respective gripping recess 12.
The device 1 comprises a recess 14 which runs parallel to, and is arranged on at least a part of, the upper long side. The width of this recess 14 is suitably adapted to the brush widths that are most common, since the brush is intended to run over this recess. When there is a certain height difference between the long side 6 and the recess 14, edges are formed where these meet, and these edges prevent the paint from spreading over the entire device 1 and / or further into the container 3. This height difference can be selected according to what the person skilled in the art finds suitable. .
Each of the long and short sides 6, 7, 8, 9 can be provided with a putty knife, a glue spreader, a graduated scale and / or a brush holder.
In addition, the corners of the rectangular surface, i.e. the disc, rounded so that they have radii corresponding to the most common radii of joint pins.
The device 1 is manufactured, as mentioned above, from a suitable material, which material is selected according to what the person skilled in the art finds suitable. The material can be, for example, cardboard, plastic or metal. The device 1 is manufactured in a suitable manner, for example by injection molding or punching. Furthermore, the device 1 can be used not only for paint but also for oil, varnish, stain or soap. If the device is made of cardboard, the cardboard should be of a quality that can withstand contact with water-soluble paint.
The device 1 is mounted on an opened container 3 by opening the groove 10 towards the edge 2 of the container 3, and the device 1 is pushed downwards over the edge 2 until the gripping recess 12 abuts against the edge 2.
The portions 4, 5 are then separated so that the groove edge 16 of the scraping portion 4 connects substantially to the inside of the container 3, and the groove edge 17 of the fastening portion 5 substantially connects to the outside of container 3. The device 1 is thereby clamped on the container 3.
The edge 2 of the container 3 can be designed in several different ways without the functionality of the device 1 deteriorating. For example, there is container 3 with an inner edge 2, which extends along the periphery of the container opening and inwards towards the center axis of the container, in a direction perpendicular to the inside of the container 3. There are also containers where the inside of the container 3 is completely smooth, where the edge 2 extends along the periphery of the opening of the container but outwards from the center axis of the container, in a direction perpendicular to the outside of the container 3.
The concave design of the middle part 11 of the groove 10 contributes to making the attachment of the device 1 stable, as a concave shape on the middle part 11 gives a larger abutment surface against the rounded container 3 than, for example, a straight design. The device 1 becomes more stable the more the concave design corresponds to the design of the relevant container 3. I.e. if the radius of the middle part 11 and the container 3 are the same, maximum stability is achieved.
The gripping recess 12 fixes the device 1 in both horizontal and vertical directions on the container 3. The long side 6, and thus the recess 14, will thus run, at least in part, from a point on the edge 2 of the container 3 to another point on the edge 2 of the container 3, so that parts of the long side 6, and the entire recess 14, are located inside the inner peripheral edge of the container 3. The brush is applied to this recess 14, and the paint then flows over the scraping portion 4 and down into the can. The brush can be ironed against both sides of the recess 14, since there is room for the paint to run down into the container 3 on both sides of the wiping portion 4. Since the fastening portion 5 is always on the outside of the container 3, this portion is kept free of paint. This means that the device 1 can be removed from the container 3 without the user getting sticky about the fingers. In addition, this gives a free space on the device 1 where it is convenient to place advertising text, company names, logos or user instructions.
It will be appreciated that a variety of modifications of the above-described embodiment of the invention are possible within the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. For example, the device can be used for liquids other than those specified and for tools other than a brush. The device can be made of materials other than cardboard, plastic and metal, and it can be provided with other extra functions than those described above. The U-shaped groove and its ends can be designed in other ways, to fit a specifically designed edge of a container. This also applies to the design of the wiping and fastening sections, and the design of the long and short sides.
